(DETROIT, MI) Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is excited to announce that it is now the home of the Michigan Arab Orchestra, and announces the first of 3 big concerts at the start of our 2012-2013 Season.
Music Hall proudly presents the Michigan Arab Orchestra’s season opening concert, Saturday, September 22 at 8:00 PM.

The concert will feature some of the greatest repertoire from across the Arab World.
Featuring vocalists: Usama Baalbaki, Ghada Derbass, Nidal Ibourk, and Faisal Wazani along with a selected group of guest artists from the across the country, featuring some of the greatest hits the Arab world has to offer, will provide a concert experience that will appeal to any lover of classical and World Music as well as a cross section of multi cultural Detroit.

The swirling rhythms and emotional flow of traditional Arab music is an exhilarating experience no matter what culture the listener comes from. Exquisite musicianship which utilizes both the traditional instruments like the nay and ‘oud, blends seamlessly with Western instruments such as the accordion and woodwinds, the result of this synthesis creates a wave of sound and energy that is unparalleled in any concert setting.

Founded in 2009, the Michigan Arab Orchestra (MAO) was originally a takht, a small chamber music group comprised of ‘oud (Arab lute), qanun (Arab zither), violin, nay (Arab reed flute), and riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble has grown to become an orchestra under the leadership of its Founder and music director, Michael Ibrahim. The MAO Orchestra is comprised of musicians from both Arab and non-Arab backgrounds who are either students or professional musicians.

The Michigan Arab Orchestra (MAO) is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to the performance, and education of Arab music to the greater Detroit community. As founder and music director, Michael has expanded the organization from a small Arab ensemble with students from the University of Michigan to a community orchestra with musicians of both Arab and non-Arab descent with the goal of establishing a professional Arab orchestra.
